Scrappy Saturday from Urban Quilter

Scrappy Texas Star top, 2024
I was inspired to start a new scrap project by a small pile of 5" squares that had been part of my Mom's fabric stash. The fabric was very "her" -- an Oriental floral with a little sparkle to it--and it struck me as also being something my friend's Mom would like. I dug into the scrap bins and created a lap quilt from the squares I had which I hope to have quilted and ready to deliver at Thanksgiving. The block is called Texas Star and I used the technique from The Big ...

black scraps becoming 9-patches
I dove into my black scrap bins and have been making 9-patches (which will disappear into the quilt) and I have strip sets ready to go into a set of blocks for the QiMFtH block drive.

I have also been keeping an eye out for more cute scrappy quilt ideas and really liked the patchwork with the stars set into it that was in the recent batch of finishes at QiMFtH.

Linking up with Scrap Happy Saturday.

RSC Heart Quilt as of Aug. 2024

We are coming into the home-stretch with the RSC -- this month the color is black and next month is dark brown. Colors on a black background will probably be my go-to for both my log cabin blocks and my heart block projects. I'm not sure that either of these colors are what I want in my log cabin project so I may not do those in these colors.

I laid out my heart and alternate blocks last month and they are coming along well. Looking at the picture I see that I ...

One Monthly Goal: June 2024 from Urban Quilter

My May goal was to finish the green scrap quilt I pieced for the RSC. I made a lot of progress --it is about half-quilted--but did not finish it. It is a present for my sister, but I didn't end up getting to see her last month (she lives 5 hours away). I hope to visit her in July, so that is my new deadline for that project.

My goal for June is to quilt a pink and green scrap quilt that Lisa and I made for a friend of ours who is battling cancer. I am stippling it ...

One Monthly Goal: May 2024 from Urban Quilter

Green scrap quilt in progress
My March goal was to machine quilt a cheater for the dog, which I  completed. By the time I was done my swirl meanders were looking pretty good. I started quilting a top with the same pattern for my Guild's charity project and my swirl meander continues to improve. I didn't set an April goal--the whole month somehow got away from me.

In May I want to finish the green scrap quilt I pieced for the RSC. I need to finish the quilting (which I started but haven't gotten far with) and ...

Purple Pickle Dish Blocks
This week I finished my 4 purple pickle-dish blocks. These went together easier than the red ones did. I discovered that it works better for me to sew with the background pieces on the top when I attach them to the curves. The directions I am using (from a 1998 issue of American Patchwork and Quilting Magazine) say to do this the other way, but I found that led me to a lot of unsewing when the background pieces got caught in the seams. I made notes on the directions so when I get back to ...

WIP - 2/21/2024 from Urban Quilter

In progress this past week:

  • I finished the top and the backing for the green scrap quilt I started as part of RSC24-January. Next step is to figure out if I have batting or if I need to go shopping.
  • I got two quilts basted (thanks to my friend Lisa!) that I am going to quilt for my guild's charity project.
  • I continue to make progress, slowly,  on the hand applique on the 3rd block of my Jacobean quilt.
  • I worked on red scraps for RSC24-February.
  • I also made a pillow and two draft-stoppers which used up most of ...

My 1st Pickle Dish Block!
I got my basket of red scraps sorted and organized and cut out all the pieces I will need to make 4 red pickle dish blocks. I also cut out all the white pieces I will need to make a dozen of these blocks. I pieced the first block which went ok. The curves are done with paper piecing which I like to do. There was some unsewing and resewing involved in getting the center curve right, but I got it worked out.

Before the month ends I will sew up the remaining 3 red ...

WIP - 1/31/2024 from Urban Quilter

In progress this past week:

  • I started the hand applique on the 3rd block of my Jacobean quilt.
  • I have most of the top done for the scrappy flannel baby quilt I am making for my Guild's charity project. Needs another border or two to bring it up to size. I got batting for it at retreat along with two other quilt tops in need of quilting.
  • I fused onto the fabric and cut out all the leaf applique shapes I had traced for my tropical quilt, and got 8 of them sewn onto the quilt. The fusible I ...

WIP - 1/24/2024 from Urban Quilter

In progress this past week:

  • I prepped the pieces for hand applique on the 3rd block of my Jacobean quilt.

  • While I was set up with the light-box I also traced a small stained-glass fish pattern for an applique  technique I want to try.

  • I traced just over half of the leaf applique shapes for my tropical quilt, and realized I need to get more fusible to finish that up. I ordered it so it should arrive soon.
  • I got started on the green scrap quilt for RSC24-January.
  • While I was looking for lining for a dog coat I found ...

20 assorted greens
I am making progress with the greens for January in the RSC24. I selected a bunch of greens from my scrap basket and have cut and kit-ed them for the blocks in the Evergreen quilt. I selected 20 fabrics from my stash, but only cut a dozen. If I finish 12 blocks and the quilt doesn't seem big enough I will make up some more blocks.

One block done!
There are a LOT of half-square-triangles in this quilt, which is not my favorite thing to sew, but if I do them in small groups it shouldn ...

WIP - 1/10/2024 from Urban Quilter

Here is what is in progress this week:

  • I finished the assembly of the last section on my blue Irish chain quilt and washed the backing fabric. I need to find batting and then baste the sections for quilting.
  • I did the applique on the 2nd block in my Jacobean quilt and finished the tracing for the 3rd block. I need to prep the applique pieces and then I can get back to doing the hand applique. It is a nice project to do during my breaks at the office.
  • I started a new project this week -- a scrappy green ...

A finished set of leaves
This month's goal is to finish the leaf appliques on my tropical quilt. I need to:

  • trace 38 leaves onto fusible web and cut them out (10 sets of 3 + 4 pairs)
  • fuse 38 leaves onto the fabric and cut them out
  • machine applique all 38 leaves in place on the edges of the quilt top
I am going on a quilt retreat at the end of the month and can do the actual applique at retreat if I get everything prepped ahead of time. I am using a variegated thread for the applique ...

WIP - 1/3/24 from Urban Quilter

I have 2 projects in progress* at the moment:

  •  I have one more section to assemble on my blue Irish chain quilt then I will need to get batting and baste the sections for quilting.
  • I am nearly done with the applique on the 2nd block in my Jacobean quilt. After that I am out of prepped pieces so the next step is to trace and prep the applique pieces for the 3rd block.
  • I found an old cheater panel in a bin I was clearing out and I want to machine quilt it for the dog. I need to ...

Quilting in progress, Sept. 2021
My #onemonthlygoal for October (which ties into my goal of finishing 7 in-progress quilts) is to finish my blue string quilt. I started quilting it at my guild retreat in September and finished about 2/3 of it. I need to finish quilting it, then get it bound.

Goal for 2021 from Urban Quilter

I have 9 quilts currently in progress, 6 of which are at the point of needing quilting. I have begun quilting a couple of them, but they all still have a good amount of work to be done. One (the house quilt, which was my June AND July OMG) is finally quilted and needs the binding finished.
I have set it as a goal for myself to complete as many of these 7 quilts as I can before the end of 2021.
Completing all 7 of them is ambitious, but seems possible over the next 3 months as I have ...

OMG July from Urban Quilter

My #onemonthlygoal for June was to finish the quilting on my house quilt. I did not accomplish that, but I did make progress. I am recycling last month's goal and setting my #onemonthlygoal for July to finish the quilting on this project.

OMG June from Urban Quilter

quilted houses and some thread choices
My #onemonthlygoal for June is to finish the quilting on my house quilt. I have quilted one of the five rows of houses and am liking how it is coming out. Each house has 2 different thread colors (one for the house and one for the roof/door) which makes it slow going. After the houses are done there is a border to be quilted.

This top was inspired by all the cute house quilts I was seeing on social media at the end of last year and it is made entirely from my ...
